Know Your Woods
Teak
Super tough, super smooth dense wood that will last for years and slowly age to a silvery grey. Endangered in Africa and illegally logged in Burma, so be sure you only buy from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved sources.
Balau
Part of the vast shorea species, this popular alternative to teak often comes from Indonesia. It has a dense grain and weathers well, subtly changing colour with age.
Oak
A highly durable wood that's loved by joiners. It's not as hardwearing or smooth as teak, but FSC supplies are available across Europe with a much lower carbon footprint.
Eucalyptus
A relatively new furniture wood to the UK, eucalyptus has a deep rich tone, but it will need looking after if you want it to survive for many British winters.
Courbaril
Like teak this hardwearing orange heartwood, usually from Guyana, will turn silvery grey over time while still keeping its smooth finish. However, it will need treating before being left outside.
